British singer-songwriter Olivia Broadfield has spent the last 15 years honing her craft of writing for television. One of her most recent career-defining moments was being asked by Sister Pictures (Chernobyl, Landscapers) to write the series 2 soundtrack for BBC One’s legal drama The Split in 2020. She was then invited back to compose music for series 3 in 2022.
Written by Emmy award-winner Abi Morgan (The Iron Lady, The Hour), The Split starred Nicola Walker and Stephen Mangan and the second series was streamed over 19 million times, becoming the third most watched drama series on BBC iPlayer in 2020. Olivia contributed 13 original songs across series 2 and series 3, including “Faultline”, which closed the show’s finale and was subsequently played on BBC Radio 2 by Claudia Winkleman, Edith Bowman and Dermot O’Leary. The album compiling all of Olivia’s music from the third series reached #2 on the iTunes charts in April 2022.
Olivia began her career as a singer-songwriter and her initial breakthrough occurred in 2008, when a placement on the cult MTV show The Real World landed her a record deal in the US with the Vagrant label. Numerous syncs across various US television shows would follow, including Grey’s Anatomy, Arrow, The Ghost Whisperer, 90210, Melrose Place and About a Boy amongst others.
Olivia has also written with other artists, which resulted in the 2015 collaboration “Bird” with Billie Marten. Marten’s recording was heralded as Radio 1’s Hottest Record in the World and Jo Whiley’s New Favourite Thing. The song was also placed in Netflix’s Virgin River and famed supernatural teen drama The Vampire Diaries.
