Singer-songwriter Nicolette is best known for joining forces with Massive Attack on the trip-hop classics “Sly” and “Three” from their 1994 album ‘Protection’. One of the most remarkable voices of the 90s, Massive Attack was attracted by Nicolette’s unique style and approached her to feature on the LP. The band sent her rough backing tracks for two songs which she took as inspiration for the haunting toplines that can be heard in the final recordings. Subsequently, the album went platinum.
The wistful music of “Sly” worked perfectly with Nicolette’s ethereal vocals and lyrical commentary on the cyclical nature of life. The track spent 7 weeks atop the UK Singles Chart, and has accumulated over 6.5 million YouTube views since its release.
Born in Scotland and raised in Nigeria before later moving to Europe, Nicolette initially gained attention in 1990 with her debut single “School of the World/Single Minded People” in collaboration with hardcore pioneers Shut Up and Dance. After several more dancefloor hits, the musician released her first album ‘Now Is Early’ to considerable critical acclaim.
Other prominent projects include the seminal release “No Government” from her 1996 record ‘Let No One Live Rent Free in Your Head’ (UK #36), which received rave reviews and hit the dancefloors with countless remixes of each of its singles. Nicolette has also collaborated with a range of respected artists including Plaid, K7, DJ Cam, John Tejada, TJ Kong, Nuno Dos Santos and Samuel Yirga and continues to write in various different musical styles from rare-groove and breakbeat to trip-hop and jungle.
Stay tuned as Nicolette is set to release new music soon.
