Kassner Music is pleased to announce the acquisition of Angusa Music Ltd, a boutique music publishing company which was established in 1965 by Albert Shalet and which boasts a catalogue of songs recorded by some of the most iconic artists of the 1960s.
Angusa Music is often associated with the early work of Yusuf Islam (at the time known as Cat Stevens), with his composition “Here Comes My Baby” being one of the most renowned in the company’s catalogue. The song became an international hit when recorded by The Tremeloes in 1967, reaching #4 in the UK and the Top 20 in many countries including the US, Canada, Sweden, Germany, Ireland, Netherlands and New Zealand. Soon after the Tremeloes release, it was included in Yusuf’s debut album Matthew and Son and has since been recorded by numerous other artists, including Yo La Tengo and The Mavericks. Angusa Music represents a further Yusuf-penned song comprised in Matthew and Son, “Come On and Dance”, together with “I’m Gonna Be King”, which appeared on his sophomore album New Masters.
The company is also the custodian in the UK, Ireland and certain other territories for “Just One Look”, written by Doris Troy and Gregory Carroll. Troy released the composition herself in 1963 and it was a significant North American hit, spending 14 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100 chart with a peak of #10 and reaching #1 in Canada. The song then reached #2 in the UK chart the following year when it was recorded by The Hollies, whose version also experienced success in Australia, New Zealand and Scandinavia. Further interpretations of the work have since been released by artists such as Linda Ronstadt, Michelle Phillips and Julia Michaels.
The Angusa Music catalogue encompasses many other works, including further songs recorded by Doris Troy (including UK Top 40 hit “What’cha Gonna Do About It” and the gorgeous 1965 release “Heartaches”) and compositions performed by acclaimed artists including Nat King Cole, Mary Wells and Lulu.
