From an early age, Edward Kassner had aspirations of writing operas. Unfortunately, any plans the young composer may have had to realise these aspirations were cut short. As an 18-year-old music student Edward was forced to flee Nazi Austria and arrived in the UK in April 1939.

Shortly after reaching England the Blitz began in 1940 and Edward, with other refugees, was sent to Australia. Like so many young internees, he wanted to join the British Army and was eventually allowed to do so. Eddie returned to Britain where, in 1943, he met a young Englishwoman, Eileen, at London’s Hammersmith Palais. They fell in love and married soon after.

In 1944 Eddie and Eileen formed The Edward Kassner Music Co Ltd.
